4 Questions to Ask Before Getting Dental Implants
Thinking about tooth replacement options? If you’re leaning toward dental implants, it’s not surprising. They’re known as the gold standard for tooth replacement. But are they right for your situation? Here are four questions to ask first.

At Pioneer Dental Group, highly trained dentist Dr. Behzad Binafard leads our team in providing full-spectrum dental care in our state-of-the-art Norwalk, California, practice. We’re proud to provide tooth restoration and replacement of all types, but dental implants are one of our most popular services.

They’re often a good option when natural tooth preservation isn’t possible, but are implants what you need? Read on to discover four key questions to ask before getting dental implants.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Many people hear “gold standard” and assume dental implants are the best choice for anyone with missing teeth. Although they’re ideal for many, some patients may require other options, such as removable dentures

Dr. Binafard assesses several key factors. For example, he measures the depth of your jawbone to determine whether your jaw can securely hold the implant posts. If you have a very thin jawbone, it might prevent a traditional dental implant from working well over time.

Dr. Binafard also examines your gums carefully. Advanced gum disease can lead to gum and bone loss, weakening the support needed for dental implants.

How long do dental implants take from start to finish?

Dental implants are a multi-step solution. The exact treatment process depends on your unique situation, so Dr. Binafard and our team provide time estimates before we begin.

In general, the first appointment involves placing the implant post. Then, you have healing time, which can take weeks to months. Most patients wear a temporary tooth as they heal. During this time, the implant post merges with your jawbone to create a stable foundation.

Your next appointment involves attaching your permanent, custom-made tooth restoration. We create these crowns in our on-site dental lab, ensuring both convenience and customization. Start to finish, the process can take several months.

How long do dental implants last?

The metal post — the part anchored in your jaw — is designed to last a lifetime. The crown (the visible tooth) can last 15-20 years with proper oral health care.

Dr. Binafard checks the crown health and implant stability during every appointment. As long as you take care of your dental implant just as you do your natural teeth, it should be long-lasting.

How do dental implants compare to other options?

This answer will differ for everyone. If you qualify for dental implants, the benefits of choosing them can include:

  • A natural look
  • A realistic feel
  • Excellent longevity
  • Support for jawbone health (the implant post stimulates bone renewal)

If you’re not a good candidate for traditional dental implants, implant‑retained dentures may be an alternative. This approach uses 4–6 strategically placed implants to support a full arch of teeth and often works well even when jawbone depth is limited.

Another option is bone grafting, a procedure that rebuilds your jaw so it can support traditional dental implants.

When gum disease is detected early, before serious gum erosion occurs, we can treat it and help prevent further damage. This can then help you qualify for dental implants.

For patients who desire a removable option or who don’t qualify for dental implants, dentures could work well. However, they’re not as durable, natural-looking, or stable as dental implants.
