How to Prevent Dry Socket Following a Tooth Extraction
Dry socket pain is no joke—once you’ve had it, you won’t want it again. Never had it? You definitely want to keep it that way. Here’s how to prevent it and heal smoothly after a tooth extraction.

If you're planning for a future tooth extraction, preventing dry socket should be one of your main goals from the start. At our family-run dental practice, Pioneer Dental Group in Norwalk, California, Behzad Binafard, DDS, and our friendly team have seen firsthand how this painful condition can delay recovery.

With over 25 years in business, we’re proud of our reputation for exceptional cosmetic and general dentistry. Dr. Binafard is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, bringing expert-level care to every patient.

This blog discusses one of the most important aspects of tooth extractions: avoiding the dreaded complication called dry socket. Here's how to make sure your recovery is smooth sailing.

Understanding dry socket

After a tooth extraction, your body forms a blood clot to shield the area during healing. If the clot becomes dislodged or dissolves too early, it can lead to a dry socket.

This painful condition exposes delicate nerves and bones. It often causes intense pain in your tooth socket that may shoot into your ear, jaw, or neck. Dry socket affects up to 5% of people who have tooth extractions. The incidence is particularly high with molar removals: About 3 in 10 people who have wisdom teeth removals experience dry socket.

Dry sockets can delay your healing and interfere with your daily life. This issue requires medical intervention to avoid potential complications like worsening pain, osteomyelitis (bone infections), or even sepsis, which is a life-threatening emergency.

Scary as all that sounds, we have good news too: Dry sockets are preventable with a little planning.

Protecting your mouth after an extraction

Dr. Binafard and our team provide customized dry socket prevention tips after your extraction, such as:

  • Leave gauze in the socket until Dr. Binafard recommends removal
  • Avoid drinking through a straw
  • Don’t smoke or vape
  • Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or yogurt
  • Eat food at a lukewarm temperature (too cold or hot may cause pain)
  • Use gentle mouth rinsing methods (only when Dr. Binafard gives you the go-ahead)
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Don’t poke or prod the socket with your tongue or fingers

Dr. Binafard also provides guidelines for taking your medication. You’ll typically receive antibiotics to help prevent infection. Take your antibiotics until all pills are gone. You may also receive pain medication, or Dr. Binafard may recommend over-the-counter options like a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

The biggest risks to your recovery

Anything that can keep the blood clot from forming or dislodge it once it’s formed is a serious threat to your recovery. That's why it’s so crucial to avoid suction, whether from a straw or puffing on a cigarette.

The nicotine in cigarettes also slows healing and increases your risk of infection. If you're planning ahead, we recommend using this time to cut back or stop smoking altogether. You’ll have a smoother and more comfortable recovery, and your whole-body health will reap enormous benefits!
